They say breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. In a bustling city like Hong Kong, there are many great spots to grab a quick bite to start off your day but amongst one of the best places serving up traditional, quick pace, Hong Kong breakfast is Australian Dairy Company 澳洲牛奶公司.
Tucked away a couple of blocks off Nathan Rd in Jordan, Australian Dairy Company serves up one of the best traditional, western-style Hong Kong Breakfast. The eatery was founded by a man who used to work on a farm in Australia in the 1940s.
Do expect a queue if you want to dine in, however the queue moves quickly as everyone in the city is on the go. Packed with customers, this is not a restaurant where you sit and take your time while getting top-notch service. Instead, you are expected to order your food, eat quickly and move on. On the positive side, the waiters are just as quick with serving you some fresh-out-of-the-kitchen scrambled eggs, toast and what not.
Amongst the signature items to get here are their scrambled eggs, usually served alongside toast or in a ham sandwich. The eggs itself are cooked to perfection. A bite explodes with a rich eggy flavor that provides a texture not found at many other places I have been for scrambled eggs. The egg is never over cooked but instead it’s cooked just long enough to provide a slight silky and creamy texture that just melts in your mouth.
A lot of the items can be ordered a la carte or you can order them as a whole set breakfast meal. The set meals are extremely inexpensive and will normally come with some or all of the following: eggs, toast, ham, macaroni soup, coffee, tea or milk tea. The macaroni soup with strings of ham is another very popular local choice of breakfast and is commonly found at many breakfast spots around Hong Kong. It is a comfort food dish that is simple to eat and a great way to start the day. While it is not as mind blowing compared to their scrambled egg, I would still recommend ordering it as part of your meal.
A Hong Kong style milk tea or a coffee pairs perfectly with this meal. You can smell the aroma of the eggs and the freshly prepared milk tea the moment you walk in. The richly brewed tea is served with evaporated milk which adds smoothness to the drink. The milk tea can be enjoyed hot or cold with ice and both options are just as great.
You might think you are done after completing a set breakfast here but you cannot leave until you’ve had their other iconic item which is their steamed milk for just under $30HKD. The steamed milk is amongst the best in Hong Kong. They serve a hot and a cold version depending on your preference. The steam milk is a milk pudding with an extremely smooth texture, clean taste of milk and just a hint of sweetness. It is extremely silky and you can easily gulp down a few big spoons and be done with a bowl.
Although, a meal here is often rushed and the service can be intimidating, at the end of the meal you’ll walk away with extreme satisfaction from the food, and sometimes that’s all that matters.
