Hung’s Delicacies // Our Favorite Meal

Hung's Delicacies: Store Front 2

Hung’s Delicacies
Address: 83 Hung To Rd, Kwun Tong, Hong Kong
Price: $$$

When planning our first trip to Hong Kong, we knew we wanted to visit at least a few Michelin starred restaurants that are known to be affordable. Hung’s Delicacies 阿鴻小吃 was one of them. They were a one star Michelin for 5 consecutive years at their old North Point location from 2010 to 2014 and amongst the only few budget eateries handed the rating. Since, they’ve relocated to Kwun Tong, which is the location that we visited on all of our trips. You can also find a branch of Hung’s Delicacies at the Hong Kong International Airport, however expect a more limited menu with few options to choose from. Outside of Hong Kong, they also have a location in Macau as well.

Hung's Delicacies: Interior

Hung’s Delicacies at Kwun Tong is situated in an industrial part of Hong Kong. Although the eatery does not offer a large number of seats, the seating arrangement is clean and comfortable with very traditional decor.

Hung's Delicacies: Cold Platter Goose

The restaurant specializes in Chiu Chow (Teochew) and Cantonese style cuisine. Many of the dishes are very affordable considering the quality and ingredients that go into them. The restaurant’s specialty is their Chiu Chow style braised meat which is meat that’s stewed in a slightly savory and sweet soy sauce. There is a large amount of mix and match you can do with most of the braised items. We usually get a mix of a few things such as pork trotters, cuttlefish, and tofu (underneath).

Hung's Delicacies: Roast Goose

We also always make sure to get a plate of the braised goose slices. The goose is the highlight of the meal for us as the meat is cooked to perfection and is topped with a seasoned sauce that matches the dish really well. With each bite the tender meat of the goose just explodes in flavor and juiciness. For anyone who has never tried goose before, it is very similar to duck and when cooked Cantonese-style, there is no gamy taste to it whatsoever. There’s also a bone-in option you can order which should cost slightly less.

Hung's Delicacies: Slipper Lobster 2

Chiu Chow cuisine is also known for their chilled cooked seafood (usually crab). The last couple of times we went, per recommendation from the staff, we ordered an item that is not typically listed on the menu which was slipper lobster, a type of lobster with enlarged, flattened antennae that gives it the flat, slipper-like appearance. The slipper lobster was cooked just long enough so that the bouncy texture of the meat is preserved but yet not hard to chew. Then it is chilled to the right temperature before serving with a little bit of scallion, soy sauce and wasabi. This dish was so fresh and delectable that we aim to order it every time we re-visit. Do call in advance to ensure this dish is in season and also available if you plan on ordering it.

Hung's Delicacies: Oyster Omelette

Another dish we also recommend ordering is the fried oyster omelette. The light crispy batter wraps around plump, juicy pieces of oyster in combination with a bit of scallion and other veggies. Each bite results in an explosion of unforgettable taste in your mouth along with a good crunch.

Hung's Delicacies: Fried Rice 1

Lastly if you are not getting white rice, then their fried rice is a must. The fried rice itself is very rich in flavor. It contains their signature XO sauce (sauce made with dried scallops), diced goose meat, veggies and dried Sakura shrimp. The ingredients and rice are fried to a golden perfection and a mouthful can easily, forever alter your definition of fried rice.

Hung’s Delicacies is a must-try for good food without breaking the bank especially if you are in the Kwun Tong area or Macau. On every one of our trips to Hong Kong, we make sure to visit even if that means going out of the way. With so many dishes to try, it’s a good idea to eat there as a large group and share the dishes family-style. However, even as someone traveling solo or in a smaller group, you should be able to order at least the braised mixed selections over rice to sample the different meats Hung’s Delicacies is known for as well as a small serving of the oyster omelette mentioned above.
